Walking Time Calculator (Naismith’s Rule)
Flat-map arithmetic lies about hills. Enter a distance, the total ascent, and your pace, and we estimate the real walking time using Naismith’s rule — with a separate adjustment for carrying a loaded pack.
Naismith’s rule
The classic estimate from 1892 still works: allow one hour for every 5 km on the flat, plus one minute for every 10 m of ascent. A 25 km Camino stage with 300 m of climb is not a 5-hour walk — it is closer to five and a half, before breaks.
We add a flat 10% on top for a loaded backpack, shown as its own line so you can ignore it on a day-hike.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to walk 25 km?
At a steady 5 km/h on flat ground, five hours of walking. Add climbing time — a minute per 10 m of ascent — plus your breaks, and a typical 25 km Camino stage takes six to seven hours door to door.
Does the estimate include breaks?
No — it is pure walking time. Most pilgrims add 15–20 minutes of stops per two hours of walking, plus a proper lunch.
