Marathon Sign Generator: Funny, Printable Race Signs
Choose a funny, motivational or personal sign, or type your own, then add the runner’s name and pick a colour. The words are set as large as the sheet allows so they read from across the road. Print it at home, take the PNG to a print shop for a bigger poster, or hold your phone up on the course.
What makes a race sign readable
A runner sees your sign for a second or two, through sweat and fatigue. The signs that land are short, three to seven words, in heavy capitals with strong contrast: dark on a bright colour, or white on black.
The generator handles the sizing for you. The shorter the message, the bigger the letters, so if a sign looks small on the preview, try cutting a word.
Where to stand with your sign
The late miles are where a sign matters most. Between mile 20 and 24 (roughly 32 to 38 km), runners are deep in the hardest stretch and grateful for anything that makes them smile. The top of a hill and the halfway mark are good spots too.
Stand on the side of the road runners will pass closest to, hold the sign still at chest height, and work out when your runner will reach you. The finish time calculator turns their goal pace into an arrival time for any point on the course.
Printing a bigger sign
An A4 or Letter print reads fine from a few metres. For something runners can read from the far side of the road, have the PNG printed at A3 or larger, or on poster board, and glue it to foam board or cardboard so it does not flap in the wind.
Rain is common on race mornings: a clear plastic sleeve or a laminate keeps the ink from running. The dark Night colour uses a lot of ink, so the Paper colour is the friendliest one for a home printer.

How big should a marathon sign be?
A3 (about 30 × 42 cm) or a 22 × 28 inch poster board reads from several metres away. A4 or Letter works if you are right at the barrier. Whatever the size, fewer words means bigger letters.
Can I put the runner’s name on the sign?
Yes. Pick a sign from the Personal tab and type the runner’s name; it fills in automatically. Or write your own message in the sign box.
