What a pace band is and why runners wear one

A pace band is a strip listing the cumulative time you should hit at each mile or kilometre marker to finish on your goal. Worn on the wrist, it turns a vague target — “sub-3:30” — into a concrete number you can check against the clock at every marker, so you know within seconds whether you are on, ahead of, or behind schedule.

The value shows up in the moment your legs start bargaining. Around 30 km a tiring runner has almost no reliable sense of pace; the band replaces feel with arithmetic that was done calmly, in advance.

Even splits or a negative split?

An even split holds one pace from gun to finish. It is the simplest plan and, on a flat course in good conditions, close to optimal — most personal bests are run within a few seconds per kilometre of dead even.

A negative split runs the second half slightly faster than the first. This band sets the two halves about 2% apart, which banks a small cushion early and guards against the classic mistake of going out too hard. Both options finish on exactly your goal time — they differ only in how the effort is distributed.

Adjusting for hills, heat and aid stations

A band assumes an even course. On a hilly route, treat the marked pace as an average — a little slower up, a little faster down — rather than forcing the exact split on every climb. In heat, set a more conservative goal time first (the Marathon Heat Calculator estimates the slowdown) and print the band for that number.

Aid stations cost a few seconds each. If you plan to walk them, either build a small buffer into your goal or accept that your watch will read a touch behind the band between stations and catch up on the running sections.

Should I follow the band exactly on every split?

Treat it as a guide, not a metronome. Aim to be within a few seconds of each elapsed time; obsessing over hitting every split to the second wastes energy. The band’s job is to stop you drifting far off pace, especially early when a fast start feels effortless.
