Boston Marathon Qualifying Time Calculator

Pick your division and your age on race day, enter a marathon time, and we show the qualifying standard that applies, how far inside or outside it you are, and the time the most recent cut-off suggests you actually need.

Qualifying is not entry

The Boston Marathon publishes a qualifying time for each age group and division, but hitting it only earns the right to apply. Because far more runners qualify than the course can hold, the Boston Athletic Association accepts the fastest applicants first and draws a line where the field fills. The gap between the published standard and that line is the cut-off.

For the 2026 race, applicants needed to be 4:34 faster than their standard to be accepted, and 8,887 qualifiers missed out. The cut-off moves every year with the strength of the applicant pool, so the safe plan is to beat your standard by several minutes rather than seconds.

The 2027 standards

The standards below apply to the 2027 Boston Marathon on April 19, 2027, and are five minutes faster in every band than those used through 2026. Your age group is your age on race day, not the day you ran the qualifier, which quietly helps anyone with a birthday in the gap.

The qualifying window for that race runs from September 13, 2025 to September 18, 2026, and the run must be on a certified marathon course. Always check the BAA site before planning around a number, since standards and windows change.

Chasing the standard

If you are close, the fastest gains usually come from picking a better race rather than training harder — a flat, cool, well-supported course is worth minutes over a hilly or hot one. Even splits matter more here than anywhere: the most common way to miss a BQ by a minute is to bank time early and pay it back double after 30 km.

Set your goal at the cut-off figure, not the standard. Build the pace band around that number and the finish takes care of itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Boston qualifying time for my age?

For 2027 it ranges from 2:55:00 for men aged 18–34 to 5:20:00 for women aged 80 and over, five minutes faster across the board than the previous standards. Enter your age and division above for your exact figure.

How much faster than the standard do I need to be?

For the 2026 race the cut-off was 4:34 below the standard. It changes annually with demand, so aim to be five to ten minutes under your standard if you want a comfortable margin.

Which age do I use for my qualifying time?

Your age on the day of the Boston Marathon you are applying for, not your age when you ran the qualifying race. A runner who turns 40 between the two uses the 40–44 standard.
