Running Age Grade Calculator
Enter a race result, your age on race day and your sex. We score the performance against the world best for a runner of that age, give you the age-graded percentage and the level it corresponds to, and show what the same run would be worth at open-class age.
What age grading measures
A 3:45 marathon at 30 and a 3:45 marathon at 62 are not the same achievement, but the clock cannot tell them apart. Age grading fixes that by comparing your time to the fastest a person of your age and sex has ever run the distance. The result is a percentage: 100% is world-best level for your age, and everything below scales down from there.
That makes performances comparable across a lifetime and across a field. It is why club results sheets and masters rankings quote age grades, and why a runner can post a personal worst on the clock and a personal best on the percentage in the same race.
Reading the percentage
The conventional bands are world class from 90%, national class from 80%, regional class from 70% and local class from 60%. Most club runners who train consistently land somewhere between 55% and 75%, and passing 70% is a genuine milestone.
The calculator also shows your equivalent open-age time: what your run would have taken had you produced the same quality of performance in your twenties. Masters runners often find it the more motivating of the two numbers.
Where the numbers come from
The factors are the 2025 WMA and USATF road tables compiled by Alan Jones and approved by the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council, covering every age from 5 to 100 for men and women at 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. They are released into the public domain, which is why this tool can use them directly rather than approximating a curve.
The open-class standards behind them are 12:49 and 13:54 for 5K, 26:24 and 28:46 for 10K, 57:31 and 1:02:52 for the half, and 2:00:35 and 2:09:56 for the marathon, men and women respectively. Age grading applies to road races; track and field events use their own tables.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good age grade percentage?
Above 60% is a solid local-class performance, 70% is regional class and a real marker of consistent training, and 80% is national class. Anything above 90% is world class. Most recreational club runners sit between 55% and 75%.
Which age do I enter?
Your age on race day, in whole years. Age grading uses single-year factors rather than five-year bands, so a birthday between two races genuinely changes the score.
Can I score above 100%?
Only by beating the world best for your age and sex at that distance, which is how new age records get noticed. If you see a figure above 100% for an ordinary result, check the distance and the time you entered.
